If pricing your handmade work feels like roulette, you’re not alone. Most crafters pick a number, hope for the best, and quietly resent the time it really took. Here’s a smarter way.
Step 1: Know your true cost.
List materials (including waste), packaging, platform fees, and labor. Give your labor an hourly rate you’d pay someone else—because you are someone else. Add them up for your Base Cost.
Step 2: Add a margin that funds growth.
Base Cost × Markup (typically 2.2–3.0 for handmade). This covers profit, taxes, tool upgrades, and your time when orders slow. If it feels “high,” remember: you’re not selling a commodity—you’re selling skill, personalization, and speed.
Step 3: Validate with the market.
Search comparable items, note ranges, and place your price with intention (not at the bottom). If you’re the only one offering rush personalization, premium materials, or bundle options, price accordingly.
Fix the “It’s too expensive” objection:
Offer tiered options (basic, custom, deluxe).
Sell bundles (tee + tumbler + card) to raise AOV.
Share process content so customers see the value behind the price.
Quick win: Build a one-page pricing calculator. Next order you quote will be confident, consistent, and profitable.
